Introduction English language Radio refers to radio stations overseas that broadcasts primarily in the English language. Often referred to as "English speaking radio" or "Expats radio" the broadcasts enables expats, holidaymakers and travellers abroad to listen to radio in their native language. The BBC World Service is an example of English language radio which can be received throughout most of the world. Other stations broadcast in English exclusively to popular holiday destinations such as Southern Spain or the French Riviera. The introduction of DAB digital radio and satellite has increased access to English language radio whilst abroad.

History The first English language radio transmission was thought to be in 1925 when Radio Paris broadcast from the Eiffel Tower, a show about fashion design, sponsored by Selfridges of London.

Location The location of most English language radio stations can be determined by their proximity to large populations of English speakers. Geneva, Switzerland, for example, which although geographically small, has many English speakers and expats, and thus English radio broadcasts. The French Riviera and Spanish Costas also serve an ever-increasing number of English speakers. The American (American Forces Network) and British Forces (British Forces Broadcasting Service) also provide English language radio throughout the world for personnel abroad.
